Hints for Success
So, youre ready to take your next strategic step on your
career path. Youve already updated your resume (CV) and
determined your general career goals and now you just need a
little assistance in finding that company that could be ideal
for you. Here are some interview tips to help you attain the
offer letter that you are pursuing.
· Do your homework. Research
the company that you are interviewing with. Find out as much
as you can prior to your interview by checking out their website,
reading articles on them, and even visiting with people who
have or are currently working there. Know the basics of what
the job entails by revisiting the job description and any other
information that you have attained.
· Be on time. You should
plan to be ready and waiting at the interview site 10 minutes
before your scheduled meeting. You need to know exactly where
you are going and how long it will take you to get there at
the given time of day. If possible, make a trial run to the
meeting site in the days before the actual interview. Make sure
that you are well rested and that your appearance and dress
are neat and clean. Do not make any appointments immediately
following the expected completion time just in case it runs
over.
· Be prepared. Be sure to
bring with you something to write with and take notes on, extra
copies of your resume to distribute to other possible interviewers,
a list of references with specific contact information, and
a list of a few questions to help you understand the position
and company better. Know why you would like to work at the company
and how your experiences, education, skills, and training can
be utilized or is valuable for this position. Be ready for the
questions that you will likely be asked by thinking of the answers
that will best portray your views and knowledge.
· Gather as much information as
you can. Make sure to take notes. Write down the names
and titles of your interviewers and get their business cards
if offered.
Here are some questions that you may want to ask:
1. What are the details of this position and how will the person
selected for it impact the company or team?
2. Why is this position available?
3. What are the details of the selection process?
4. Do you have orientation and/or training programs available?
5. When and why did the interviewer join the company?
6. When can you expect to hear back from the company after the
interview?
Always keep in mind that the interview is your platform to showcase
your ability to problem solve, set and attain goals, manage
your time, and other work related skills. It is all up to you
to convey your enthusiasm, energy, confidence, reliability,
integrity, and communication skills.
Here are some other helpful tips that
should be considered:
· Be truthful and honest.
· Smile and exhibit your enthusiasm (even if it is a
phone interview).
· Give a firm handshake when introduced and when finished
with the interview.
· Maintain good eye contact.
· Wait until you have been offered a chair before sitting.
· Sit upright with your back straight showing your attentiveness
and energy.
· Be a great listener first, and then be a good talker.
· Keep your answers relative and to the point, dont
allow yourself to ramble or get off on tangents.
· Be positive about all previous companies and supervisors.
· Try to relate any non-strength to your strengths, i.e.
No, I havent worked extensively in oncology, however,
I did a cardiology study with no prior experience and learned
that area relatively quickly.
· Always thank the interviewers for their time
